Frankfurt Roundtrip
7 Night Southern Rhine City Experience Cruise
The Rhine is the chameleon of the world’s rivers. Sometimes it seems wild; indeed, in the past it was dangerous, particularly at the Lorelei rocks. At other times it appears vast, as when it joins the Moselle in Koblenz. The romantic meadows of Rastatt invite you to picnic after an afternoon of rowing. And at other times human beings have tamed the river and turned it into an ornamental companion for elegant riverside promenades in cities such as Basle. It’s the perfect match for Baroque and Gothic architecture, and it looks amazing in photos. But its true home is between wild cliffs and dense forests, and between knights’ castles and winemaking villages whose vineyards it has made fertile over the course of its history.
DAY 1: Frankfurt (Embarkation)
We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.DAY 2: Speyer
Today, you'll find yourself in Germany's enchanting Upper Rhine nestled in the heart of Europe. Here, the natural surrounds are some of the most picture-perfect you'll see on your A-ROSA river cruise, with terraced vineyards, expansive forests, high peaks and nature trails just waiting to be explored. Your port today will be Speyer, where you'll discover rich German hospitality and history, and the perfect place to spend a day of laidback discovery.DAY 3: Strasbourg
Treading the tightrope between Germany and France, Strasbourg is a city straight out of the story books. The images you expect of this highlight of the Alsace region are all conjured up before you in the old town's higgledy-piggledy colourful houses and twisting streets. Head down to the canals of Petit France and hole up in one of the traditional cosy winstubs, or Alsatian taverns, they're the perfect place to get your bearings of this quirky city before hitting the tourist trail. Strasbourg Cathedral is a must-see. For 227 years, this spellbinding sandstone structure was the tallest building in the world, and it's still well worth a trip to the top of the tower where views stretch as far as the Black Forest, some 30km away.DAY 4: Strasbourg
Morning to explore on your own. Ship departs at 12 noon for Basel Switzerland.DAY 5: Basel
Uniquely positioned where France, Germany and Switzerland meet, Basel dances to the beat of its own drum with a strong and proud identity, bustling arts scene and dual language. You'll discover all of the fascinating quirks of Basel today, with a day strolling around its pretty old town, admiring the awe-inspiring cathedral and dipping in and out of its roll call of over 40 excellent museums. Sitting astride the River Rhine, Basel is a great city to visit at any time of the year. Blessed with up to 300 days of sunshine, and equally as enchanting as winter draws in and Christmas twinkles in the windows of the shops and lights up the streets, this is a city hard not to fall in love with. We recommend starting your day at the Münsterplatz, where the 1,000 year old cathedral towers over the square, before soaking up the spectacular views over the Rhine from the Pfalz (viewing platform). Head into a traditional cosy restaurant for lunch, or visit one of the city's buzzing food markets. Depending on the weather, choose to enjoy the afternoon in the city's famous zoo, or cherry-pick your favourite museum. There's everything from natural history to the world's largest collection of stuffed teddy bears.DAY 6: Breisach
Make sure you have your cameras to hand as you sail into your next port. Perched on a steep cliff above the Rhine, Breisach is picture-perfect with pastel-hued buildings set in beautiful rolling vineyards. Where the Black Forest spills into the Alsace region, this German town shares a lot with its French neighbours - its love of good food and good wine amongst them. Painstakingly reconstructed after almost total devastation in WWII, this pretty port is made for a leisurely day's exploring. We recommend making the climb uphill to St Stephen Cathedral, the town's major landmark and seat of extraordinary views across this attractive region.DAY 7: Mainz
At the very heart of the Rhineland's wine growing region, sophisticated Mainz is the perfect mix of history, culture and high-living. Wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town, and lose yourself among half-timbered buildings housing colourful bars, traditional shops and great eateries. This area is most famed for its fantastic Riesling and Silvaner wines, so it'd be remiss not to sit, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a perfectly chilled glass of this top tipple whilst on dry land. There's much more than just excellent vintages to this pretty city though. The Altstadt also plays host to the impressive 1,000-year-old Mainzer Dome, a masterpiece of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles, as well as the fantastic Gutenberg Museum. Commemorating Mainz's illustrious printing past, bibliophiles can explore how home-grown Mainz talent, Johannes Gutenberg invented the letterpress, revolutionising how books were printed and told through presses, magazines, newspapers, and most notably, the two fascinating and almost 500-year old Gutenberg bibles.
This morning the ship docks at Mainz, one of Germany's most historic cities. Today's optional walking tour of the city will introduce you to some of the highlights such as St Stephen's Church, with its windows by Chagall, St Martin's Cathedral and the university, originally built as a Jesuit college between 1615 and 1618.
DAY 8: Frankfurt (Disembarkation)
Frankfurt is undergoing something of a metamorphosis, so expect to find a booming city rubbing shoulders with classic traditional German charm here on the banks of the Main. After suffering serious damage in WWII, Frankfurt has risen from the ashes as one of Europe's premier financial centres. So expect glittering skyscrapers dominating the cityscape, earning the city one of its new monikers, 'Mainhattan'. With a cluster of distinct neighbourhoods to explore, wander beautiful botanical gardens, cobblestone streets and dip into cafes, boutiques and museums. The dining scene here is delicious too, influenced by Frankfurt's melting pot of cultures and nationalities, there's everything from vegan cuisine to cosy German cookery. Head to the restored Altstadt (Old Town) and see the reconstructed and newly-built timber-framed houses so synonymous with this region, centred around the lively Romerberg Square for a taste of something completely authentic.
