7 night Rhine and Mosel
cruising Cologne to Treis-Karden, Bernkastel-Kues, Trier-Mehring,
Zell, Cochem and Koblenz to Cologne
Villages snuggled into vineyards as if they want to make life especially pleasant for their residents. The Rhine’s longest tributary brings with it a landscape that’s as soft and gentle as the Mediterranean climate. With its sumptuous Rieslings, blossoming hillsides and railway lines that look like they belong in a model railway set, the narrow Moselle valley is one of the prettiest turns a Rhine cruise can take. For travellers who have already been amazed by the mighty castles, the winemaking towns with their timbered-dwellings, and the legendary Lorelei of the Rhine, the valley offers yet another panorama. Not to mention the spectacular churches, monasteries and secular buildings from all periods that line the banks of the Rhine as densely as allotments line other rivers.

Detailed Itinerary:
Day 1: Cologne, Germany (Embarkation)
Cologne, the old Cathedral city, is also one of the most important traffic hubs and commercial centres in Germany, with world famous trade fairs and a busy shipping traffic. Cologne developed out of a Roman colony and looks back on a history of more than 2000 years. In the Middle Ages it was one of the leading towns in Germany. The Second World War destroyed most of the inner city; these parts were rebuilt in a modern style. The landmark and emblem of the city is the Cathedral, a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Other tourist attractions are the town hall, the Malakoff Tower, the St Martin Church and the old abbey.
We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.
Day 2: Treis-Karden
Treis-Karden stands out due to its beautiful location directly on the Moselle. On both sides of the river is the small town with its approximately 2,500 inhabitants. A special highlight of the village are the two castles of Treis.
Day 3: Bernkastel-Kues
The twin town of Bernkastel-Kues is located at a wide bend in the Mosel. Kues and Bernkastel have been united since 1905 and joined with a bridge. The area has been settled for a very long time; a village from the Early Stone Age was discovered in Kues, the oldest known settlement along the Mosel. The city’s tourist attractions include the beautiful market square with the town hall, the St Michael fountain, the half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries and the parish church of St Michael.
Experience the unforgettable atmosphere of a picturesque old town full of history and culture, as your Rhine cruise takes you along the Moselle. Enjoy award-winning wines from well-known sites – whether in one of the cosy wine bars, in a rustic wine tavern during a wine-tasting session with a winemaker, or during a tour of the steep vineyard slopes.
Day 4: Trier-Mehring (Germany)
Today gives you the chance to sample a real piece of history as your A-Rosa river cruise calls at Trier, Germany's oldest city. Start your tour at the Porta Nigra, Trier's UNESCO-listed Roman gate (one of eight UNESCO sites in the area), and the best preserved example in the world. From the top, you'll enjoy beautiful views across the entire city, including the Trierer Dom, the oldest cathedral in the country. Next door, you'll find the Liebfrauenkirche, one of Germany's two earliest Gothic churches and the perfect contrast to the Romanesque splendour of the Trierer Dom.
As you stroll around, you'll quickly see this is a city alive with over 2,000 years of history. Sitting down for a meal and a drink here even offers up the opportunity to delve into the treasure trove of Trier's past. One of its quirkiest restaurants is Zum Domstein on the market square. With a well-booked-up basement surrounded by Roman excavations, you'll have the opportunity to sample traditional Roman dishes dating back to 30 AD. Reservations are a must.
Day 5: Trier-Mehring - Zell (Germany)
The wine town of Zell is located directly on the Moselle loop "Zeller Hamm". The beautiful wine landscape can be discovered on a beautiful hike. In addition, you should not miss the opportunity of a wine tasting.
Day 6: Zell - Cochem, Germany
Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The entire Moselle region around Cochem is a real sight to behold. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank? Strange, but true! And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise.
Day 7: Cochem - Koblenz (Germany)
Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.
Day 8: Cologne (Disembarkation)
Your cruise comes to an end this morning as you disembark in Cologne after breakfast.
