16 night Danube River Cruise

Hardly any other river has as many tales to tell as the Danube. Most people know it as a waterway. But what becomes clear as you follow its course is that this queen of rivers is home to the very essence of European heritage. Its banks are lined with architectural grandeur and monuments of a vast history in cities such as Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. The further the river flows, the more noticeably the landscape changes. In Vidin, Rousse and Novi Sad, you will discover unique regional traditions. In Fetesti, it becomes clear that the fabled Wallachia is not at the end of the world, but rather at the beginning of a remarkable unspoilt natural landscape. At he cataracts of the Iron Gates, striking narrow rock formations appear. Then the banks of the river open up again. the horizon widens until the Danube braches out in to a network of waterways, reeds and vast skies in the delta, flowing intot the Black Sea. The river becomes calmer and the landscape even more untouched. As you return home from your Delta cruise, you will have gained a completely new perspective on Europe.

DAY 1 Vienna, Austria - Bratislava, Slovakia

Your cruise starts in Vienna, the glamorous capital of Austria, where every street is full of history and every nook and cranny is brimming with cultural riches. In Vienna, tradition and modernity merge to create a fascinating cityscape that will delight you with its grand palaces, fascinating museums and vibrant markets. Stroll along the pompous Ringstrasse, visit the majestic Hofburg Palace and let yourself be enchanted by the sounds of classical music that permeate the city.

Bratislava, the youngest capital in Europe, is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. Cultures meet and merge together. The streets of the old town – lined with well-preserved baroque and rococo city palaces – are filled with the sound of people speaking different languages.

DAY 2 Bratislava, Slovakia

Squeezed snugly between Austria and Hungary, Slovakia's capital Bratislava may be compact, but it packs a punch in history, culture and striking looks. With a location that has carved it out as an ethnic melting pot since ancient times, you can expect to see the influence play out in every corner of the city. Picture a medieval and Gothic old town alive with the sound of different languages and nationalities, grand baroque palaces built by Hungarian nobility and communist-era blocks and unique futuristic bridge reflecting its more recent past. Travel outside of the city, along the banks of the River Danube, and -you'll also find the surrounding area is naturally blessed too. Rolling away to the north of Bratislava, you'll discover the excellent vineyards of the Small Carpathians waiting to be discovered.

DAY 3 Ilok, Croatia

Ilok is the easternmost town in Croatia forming a geographic salient surrounded by Vojvodina. Located in the Syrmia region, it lies on the Fruška Gora hill overlooking the Danube river, which forms the border with the Bačka region of Serbia. The town is home to a Franciscan monastery and Ilok Castle, which is a popular day trip for domestic and cross-border tourists

DAY 4 Belgrade, Serbia

You can firmly feel yourself setting foot into Eastern Europe as you explore Belgrade. Whilst not the prettiest city on the Danube, Serbia's capital tells a tale of grandiose history and more tumultuous recent past. Here, where the Danube and the Sava Rivers meet, expect old-world Yugoslav culture meets new-world Europe. Enjoy a hearty breakfast on board, you're going to need it for the day's exploring. Knez Mihailova is your perfect intro to this gritty city, lined with historical buildings and grandiose coffee houses, this lively boulevard runs all the way up to the ancient Belgrade Fortress, built and rebuilt again and again over 16 centuries as successive powers took control of the 'White City'. The vibrant riverside quarter, Savamala, has gone from ruins to rejuvenation, its derelict mansions and warehouses forming a colourful and bohemian hub for the city's free-thinkers and creatives. All this peppered with Art Noveau masterpieces, Ottoman relics, Communist-era blocks and a treasure trove of fascinating museums.

DAY 5 Vidin, Bulgaria

Right on the banks of the Danube lies the Bulgarian city of Vidin. The history of the city dates back to years before Christ. Perhaps the most famous landmark is the Baba Vida Fortress, the only fully preserved medieval fortress in Bulgaria.

DAY 6 Fetesti, Romania

Fetești, a charming town in Romania, will enchant you with its picturesque location on the banks of the Danube. The historic centre will captivate you with its well-preserved buildings from different eras and its picturesque cobbled streets.

DAY 7 Fetesti, Romania

The area around Fetești offers a wide range of outdoor activities, such as boat trips on the Danube and hikes in the surrounding countryside. Local markets and traditional restaurants invite you to experience authentic Romanian cuisine and hospitality.

DAY 8 Fetesti, Romania

As grand finales go, the River Danube's takes some beating. After passing through ten countries, leaving its fascinating mark on each, today you'll see it's saved its best for last. Where Romania dips towards the Black Sea, the unique and scenically spectacular Danube Delta unfolds around you. Picture calm waters dotted with floating islands, sand dunes gently rolling at the river's edge and nature in full flourish. This biosphere reserve is home to Europe's largest pelican colony, and some 5,200 plant and animal species have been catalogued here so far too.
Plus, the area's continental climate means lots of sun, and little rain. If ever there was the perfect recipe for river cruising, your relaxed floating hotel navigating this wonderful waterway is it.

DAY 9  Rousse, Romania

During your Danube Delta cruise, you’ll discover the beautiful port of Rousse. Many people consider this pearl of northern Bulgaria, nestled among the most varied landscapes of the eastern Danube plain, the country’s prettiest city. By the time you have taken a stroll along Ulitsa Aleksandrovska, between Rousse’s two main squares, you’ll probably feel the same. Enjoy your day in Bulgaria!

DAY 10 Cruising Day

During your cruising day, enjoy watching the scenery drift by as you look forward to the next towns and cities. Our tip: the SPA-ROSA is a great place to unwind and pamper yourself during your day on the river.

DAY 11 Cataracts - Turnu Severin, Romania

The most impressive and well-known river gorge in Europe is the over 100 km long stretch of rapids with the famous Iron Gate, marking the border between Serbia on the right bank and Romania on the left bank of the Danube. The Danube winds its way through the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains here, passing through sections of up to 300 meters high cliffs. This renowned stretch along the river is a highlight of a Danube River cruise.

Right next to the breathtaking statue of Decebalus carved in stone and the magnificent little church of Mraconia located in the Danube Valley one will find the village of Turnu Severin. This tranquil little town perfectly reflects Romanian life. Take a stroll through the center and discover the historical water tower or the ancient relics from the Roman times, such as the Trajan's Bridge built in 102-105 AD.

DAY 12  Novi Sad, Serbia

Welcome to Novi Sad! Sitting on the banks of the River Danube, enchanting Novi Sad perfectly blends the old and the new with an elegant city centre overlooked by the imposing Petrovaradin Fortress. Nicknamed the 'Athens of Serbia', Novi Sad offers up a rich culture and past, best seen in the magnificent buildings of the old town or by journeying out of the hustle & bustle to the rolling hills of Fruska Gora National Park. Here, some 35 monasteries built between the 15th and 18th centuries protected Serbian culture from the Turks and the 16 still standing are open to the public and well worth exploring. Back in the city centre, enjoy a glass of the region's famous dessert wine, Bermet and soak up the lively atmosphere of the kafanas (traditional Serbian taverns). With its laidback and liberal air, it's little wonder the city has been pegged as 2021's European Capital of Culture, and we're sure it'll claim a piece of your heart on your Danube river cruise.

DAY 13  Cruising Day

During your cruising day, enjoy watching the scenery drift by as you look forward to the next towns and cities. Our tip: the SPA-ROSA is a great place to unwind and pamper yourself during your day on the river.

DAY 14 Budapest, Hungary

Do you know how many bridges Budapest has? There are seven in total – and they span the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures for yourself as you cruise down the Danube. And if you go out onto the sun deck of your A-ROSA ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.

DAY 15 Budapest, Hungary - Vienna, Austria

As views from the river go, Budapest is pretty hard to beat. Straddling both sides of the water, the 'Pearl of the Danube' is chock-full of grand imperial buildings, dramatic history and contrasting scenery. On the Buda side of the Danube, you'll discover a landscape of rolling hills and gloriously over-the-top buildings, the impressive Hungarian Houses of Parliament amongst them. While over in former Pest, you'll find a more buzzy, bourgeois feel, an eclectic mix of cafes, bars and restaurants perfectly complementing lavish Buda. Besides the good looks, the history books also have a lot to say about this city. While it retains its Golden Age-glamour, its more recent past is everywhere you look too. As you explore the city, you'll find poignant reminders of its place in WWII and the 1956 Uprising including bullet holes and shrapnel marks as well as the moving Shoes on the Danube memorial.

DAY 16 Vienna, Austria

Vienna has a rich history, with its emperors, Elisabeth of Austria and the ostentatious Habsburgs, adding to its fascination. Music also plays a big part of any visit where the First Viennese School of composers Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven were equally inspired by the city. Explore The Hofburg Palace, take a ride on the Riesenrad Ferris Wheel or visit the famous traditional coffee houses. The Austrian capital also produces excellent cuisine, with Wiener schnitzel and Sachertorte worth trying.!

DAY 17 Vienna, Austria

Your unforgettable cruise comes to an end in Vienna, the city of music, art and flair. Here, where the baroque façades gleam in the sunlight and the aroma of coffee and Sachertorte fills the air, you will be greeted by a mesmerising atmosphere. The majestic buildings along the banks of the Danube reflect in the calm water and create a magical scenery for your last hours on board.

There is simply nowhere like Vienna. Rich in culture, gastronomy and good looks, this grand city is wonderful at any time of year. Picture Baroque palaces, enormous beautifully-tended gardens hidden behind unassuming facades, the grandest of coffee houses where you can practically sense the historic figures of yesteryear putting their heads together. From Freud to Klimt, Beethoven to Strauss, this intellectual and musical juggernaut will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your Danube cruise. And that's without even mentioning the famous Sachertorte... Vienna - a great stop-over after your cruise.
