DAY 2: COCHEM - ALKEN - KOBLENZ
We have buffet breakfast on board this morning before our optional guided walking tour of Cochem, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Moselle”. The old town has managed to retain much from its prestigious past, including fine squares dating from the Middle Ages and half-timbered houses. Here we discover the fresco retracing the history of the town from its occupation by the Roman armies right up to the 20th century. As we walk along its pretty alleys, we see St Martin’s Church, the former Capuchin Monastery and the market square. We return on board at the end of the morning and set sail again, heading for Alken. We spend the afternoon cruising along the Moselle, whose meanders have carved out a unique landscape of incredible beauty, just crying out to be explored. The vines that adorn the sloping banks of the river are yet another charming attraction in the region. After lunch on board, we arrive in the early afternoon in Alken. Here we have an optional visit to Thurant Castle. An excellent symbol of the region, the fortified castle at Thurant is one of the oldest in the Moselle region. Count Palatin Heinrich, brother of King Otto VI, had the castle built in 1197 on his return from the crusades. From the terrace, there is a spectacular view of the Moselle. We return on board to prepare for dinner and an evening of entertainment. As we dine, our cruise continues towards Koblenz, where we arrive during the evening. After dinner the evening is free.
DAY 3: KOBLENZ - BOPPARD - RÜDESHEIM
We have buffet breakfast on board this morning as we cruise to Boppard. An old Imperial town, there is much to see in Boppard which bears testimony to its past. We have free time to explore or wander at leisure or join our on-board hostess on a discovery tour of the town. We return on board for lunch and continue our cruise towards Rüdesheim. The journey along the river through the romantic Rhine Valley has been listed by UNESCO as part of World Heritage since 2002. All along the banks of the river, we see fortified castle after castle and medieval village after medieval village, set amidst the renowned Rhine vineyards – arguably the most beautiful in all Germany. We also pass the legendary Loreley Rock, named after a beautiful young maiden who, according to German legend, threw herself into the river in despair over a faithless lover and was transformed into a siren. This legend has always fascinated visitors from the world over. We arrive in Rüdesheim around 6pm. Here we are free to wander or join our optional excursion where we set off by tourist train, enjoy some tasting of the famous wines of the region and have a guided tour of the Museum of Mechanical Music, housing one of the largest collections of mechanical musical instruments. We return on board for dinner, after which the evening is free to wander along the famous Drosselgasse.
