DAY 4 AVIGNON – LES BAUX DE PROVENCE - VIVIERS, The Ardèche gorges

We wake up in Avignon and have buffet breakfast on board. This morning we can either enjoy some free time in Avignon or join an optional excursion to les Baux de Provence, undoubtedly one of the prettiest villages in France. It is located in the heart of the Alpilles mountains on a rocky outcrop with exceptional, breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside – Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles mountains. The huge ruined castle, which overlooks the plains to the south, is one of the must-visit sites in all of Provence. We return on board for lunch and set sail again to Roquemaure, from where we set off by coach on our optional excursion through the Ardèche Gorges. We first head for Bourg Saint Andéol, crossing the Gras Plateau before we arrive in Vallon Pont d’Arc. Here the Ardèche has bored its way through the cliffs, resulting in a huge natural archway, the “Pont d’Arc”, which is 34m high. From here, we take the famous road though the Gorges from where we can see the meandering river. Our journey takes us past several viewing points, located on the high corniche (or ledge), from where we have breathtaking views of the Gorges. We head for Saint-Etienne-des-Sorts and rejoin our floating hotel around 5pm. Around 6pm, we set sail again, this time heading for Viviers. We have dinner on board and arrive in Viviers around 9.30pm, where we moor for the night.

DAY 5 VIVIERS - TAIN L’HERMITAGE, The Vercors

An early start to our cruise this morning, as we leave Viviers and head for La Voulte. We spend the full morning afloat, as we have buffet breakfast and lunch on board. We arrive in La Voulte shortly after lunch and this afternoon, our optional excursion is to the Vercors. We set off by coach for Loriol, Die where we visit a cellar and have tastings of the famous Clairette de Die sparkling wine. Afterwards, we drive along the Col du Rousset mountain road from where there are spectacular panoramic views over the Vercors plateau. We continue our journey to Vassieux-en-Vercors, La Chapelle en Vercors and Pont-en-Royans, famous for its “hanging houses”. We head for Tain l’Hermitage and rejoin our floating hotel in time to prepare for our Gala Dinner and evening of entertainment. We moor awhile in Tain l’Hermitage before continuing our cruise again as we sleep.
