5 Day Romantic Rhine

We board in Strasbourg between 5.00 and 6.00pm (at the river port on the rue du Havre) and set sail for Mainz. After settling into our cabins, we are introduced to the crew over a welcome cocktail. Dinner on board is followed by an evening of entertainment. We continue our cruise through the night.

We arrive early this morning in Mainz. After buffet breakfast on board, we have an optional guided tour of Mainz and visit the Gutenberg Museum. Capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz was founded over 2000 years ago by the Romans. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the world’s best architects and sculptors shaped the outline of the town, with many fine palaces and churches. Here we have the chance to admire the magnificent historic houses which have been wonderfully restored. We then visit the Gutenberg Museum (closed Mondays), the world’s finest museum for printing equipment, materials and books, which has two copies of the Gutenberg Bible, the oldest printed book in the world. We return on board for lunch and spend the afternoon cruising in the direction of Rüdesheim, where we arrive in the early afternoon. Here we are free to wander or join our optional excursion where we set off by tourist train, enjoy some tasting of the famous wines of the region and have a guided tour of the museum of Mechanical Music, housing one of the largest collections of mechanical musical instruments. We return on board and set sail again around 5pm, continuing our cruise towards Boppard. The journey along the river through the romantic Rhine Valley has been listed by UNESCO as part of World Heritage since 2002. All along the banks of the river, we see fortified castle after castle and medieval village after medieval village, set amidst the renowned Rhine vineyards – arguably the most beautiful in all Germany. We also pass the legendary Lorelei rock, named after a beautiful young maiden who, according to German legend, threw herself into the river in despair over a faithless lover and was transformed into a siren. This legend has always fascinated visitors from the world over. We have dinner on board and arrive in Boppard in the evening. An old Imperial town, there is much to see in Boppard which bears testimony to its past. After dinner, we have free time to explore or wander at leisure or join our on-board hostess on a discovery tour of the town.

We begin our cruise first thing and head for Koblenz. We have buffet breakfast on board and arrive in Koblenz early morning. Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle rivers, Koblenz is a city over 2000 years old and has retained many of its ancient monuments and historic buildings. Join our on-board hostess on a discovery tour of the town. We return on board for lunch and set sail for Alken, where we arrive in the early afternoon. Here we have an optional visit to Thurant Castle. An excellent symbol of the region, the fortified castle at Thurant is one of the oldest in the Moselle region. Count Palatin Heinrich, brother of King Otto VI, had the castle built in 1197 on his return from the crusades. From the terrace, there is a spectacular view of the Moselle. We return on board to prepare for dinner and an evening of entertainment. We moor for the night.

We have buffet breakfast on board this morning as we set off on our cruise to Cochem. We spend the morning cruising along the Moselle, whose meanders have carved out a unique landscape of incredible beauty, just crying out to be explored. The vines that adorn the sloping banks of the river are yet another charming attraction in the region. We arrive in Cochem at the end of the morning and have lunch on board. This afternoon, we have an optional guided walking tour of Cochem, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Moselle”. The old town has managed to retain much from its prestigious past, including fine squares dating from the Middle Ages and half-timbered houses. Here we discover the fresco retracing the history of the town from its occupation by the Roman Armies right up to the 20th century. As we walk along its pretty alleys, we see St Martin’s Church, the former Capuchin Monastery and the market square. We have some free time for independent exploration before we return on board. Our Gala dinner tonight is followed by an evening of dancing and entertainment.

Breakfast on board. Arrival in Cochem around 09.00am. End of our journey.
