Abbeville to Peronne

Sept 6 - 12, 2015

Our charming hotel barge Johanna takes you along one of the oldest waterways of France through the unspoilt countryside of the Gâtinais, the flower- and bread basket of Paris. Along the route, we discover old castles and newly built cathedrals, ancient locks and sleepy little villages.

DAY 1. Péronne:
Welcome on board. Maybe you can start your discovery with a visit to the Memorial of the Great War museum.

DAY 2. Froissy:
A small hamlet near Cappy on the meandering Somme river. It is most known for its narrow track train dating from the 1st World War. It’s another way of traveling the slow way while enjoying the area…

DAY 3. Corbie:
After a morning of sailing or cycling along the meandering Somme river, the abbey of Corbie, dating from the 7th century, is a welcome point of rest.

DAY 4. Amiens:
A historic city full of life, certainly around the Saint Leu quarter with its many restaurants along the waterside. But don’t forget to visit the cathedral or the floating gardens (hortilonages).

DAY 5. Long:
Cycling from Amiens to Long, visit the medieval reconstruction parc of Samara. Long is a small village with its own hydro-electric power plant, built in 1903 and in operation till 1968. Beautiful view from the lock to the Chateau.

DAY 6. Abbeville:
Historic city with its origin going back to the 7th century as a dependency of the nearby abbey of Saint Riquier which you probably passed while cycling from Long to Abbeville. some buildings date back to the 13th century. From Abbeville, you can make an excursion to Saint Valéry en Crotoy at the Somme Bay. At low tide, you can even walk across the bay but be careful, the tide rises very quickly.

DAY 7. Abbeville:
Farewell after breakfast.
