Amsterdam to Basel Itinerary Map

Explore both medieval and modern stained-glass installations along the Rhine River with an expert in the field.

An award-winning artist and hands-on conservator at Clerkin Higgins Stained Glass, NYC, Mary Clerkin Higgins has conserved stained glass from the 12th century to the present for numerous museums and institutions across the United States. Her new work has been selected for Corning’s annual New Glass Review and she continues to write and lecture frequently on stained glass. Higgins is also a founder and past president of the American Glass Guild, which recently presented her with a lifetime-achievement award.

Higgins appears in the documentary,?“Let There Be Light”?created by filmmaker, Peter Swanson. Currently airing on PBS, the film follows three grand masters of stained glass as they make their last window for the Washington National Cathedral. Told with stunningly beautiful images, its aim is to inspire and ignite that inner creative light that is within all of?US.

Join grandmaster Mary Clerkin Higgins from November 10 -17, 2018 as she takes to the river, exploring stained glass installations at some of the most notable landmarks along the Enchanting Rhine. The AmaPrima ? your luxurious home-away-from-home, provides a destination in itself ? offering incredibly spacious riverview staterooms, luxurious amenities, critically acclaimed dining, best-in-class service and much, much more.

Plus, here are some additional special perks, just for you:

  • A celebratory champagne Welcome Reception with Mary and?“Let There Be Light”?filmmaker Peter Swanson.
  • Join Mary as she delves into the nuances of the stained-glass installations of Freiburg Cathedral, Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Strasbourg and the famous Cologne Cathedral, home to works by Gerhard Richter.
  • And a few more surprises!

Day 4 MANNHEIM - HEIDELBERG - RUDESHEIM, GERMANY

You'll have a choice of three excursions. Visit Heidelberg, the perfectly preserved medieval city nestled in the Neckar River Valley along Germany?s Castle Road. Discover the iconic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle and Great Vat, an 18th-century 49,000-gallon wine cask. For a more active adventure while in Heidelberg, join a guided hike up the Philosopher's Path and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city. Alternatively, you can visit one of Germany?s oldest cities, Speyer, known for the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe?a UNESCO World Heritage Site?and the medieval Altp?rtel, Old Gate. Later in the day, set sail to R?desheim, where you'll have the opportunity to visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum or enjoy a tasting of R?desheimer coffee, ceremoniously made with brandy. (B,L,D)

Day 5 RUDESHEIM - KOBLENZ

Spend the morning in R?desheim and enjoy a tasting of Riesling wines after a lovely gondola ride soaring high above the vineyards en route to the Niederwalddenkmal Statue. A third choice is cycling along the Rhine and through this scenic town. Home to one of Germany?s most revered Gothic masterpieces, the Cologne Cathedral, this 2,000 year-old city is also a bustling cosmopolitan hotspot. Join a guided tour through the enchanting Old Town and explore the UNESCO-designated cathedral, where the remains of the fabled Three Kings?the Magi? are believed to rest. Alternatively, ride a bike along the Rhine and through the historic Stadtgarten. Or visit a local tavern to taste K?lsch beer and Reibekuchen?potato pancakes served with apple sauce. (B,L,D)
